Rev. Vincent Angus MacDonald
Passing of Clergyman Is Mourned
Rev. Vincent Angus MacDonald, chaplain of the R.K.MacDonald Guest Home in Antigonish, died suddenly Monday in St. Martha's Hospital.
Father MacDonald who was widely known in the industrial area was born in French Road area on Dec.5,1904, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Angus MacDonald.
He received his early education at Sydney Academy and went to St. Dunstan's University in Charlottetown.
Following studies at St. Dunstan's he returned to Sr. Francis Xavier University where he obtained his bachelor of arts degree. Father MacDonald studied at Grand Seminary in Quebec and was ordained to the priesthood in St. Ninian's Cathedral, Antigonish on May 21, 1932 by the late Bishop James Morrison.
Father
MacDonald served as assistant priest at Grand Mira, Port Hawksbury, St. Anne's, Glace Bay and in New Waterford and Inverness. He served as administrator at North Sydney and a pastor at Mulgrave. He was chaplain at St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish from 1959 until this year when he was appointed chaplain of R.K. MacDonald Guest Home.
He is survived by four brothers and four sisters: Stephen and John, both in Sydney, Joseph, Westmount, and James in Sydney River; sisters Annie MacDonald, Sydney; Miss Mary MacDonald, Montreal; Miss Catherine MacDonald, Boston, and Mrs. Margaret Dwyer, Boston.
The remains will rest at the R.K. MacDonald Guest House until Wednesday when they will be forwarded to Sydney where they will rest at Sacred Heart Glebe.
The funeral will be held Thursday morning at Grand Mira, Mass of Requiem will be offered by His Excellency, Most Rev. William E. Power, Bishop of Antigonish, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Grand Mira.
Ordination to the Holy Priesthood was also conferred on Rev. Vincent MacDonald by His Excellency, the Right Reverend James Morrison, D.D., on May twenty- first.
Father Vincent was ordained in St. Nenian's Cathedral, Antigonish, and celebrated his First Solemn Mass on Trinity Sunday in St. Margaret's Church, Grand Mira, Cape Breton. Congratulations. (1932)

Miss Cecelia Gillis, 86, Spring Garden Villa for the past four years,
died at St. Rita Hospital, Tuesday, Feb. 21. Born at Grand Mira, she was
the daughter of the late Duncan M. and Isabel (MacEachern) Gillis. She
was a member of St. Joseph's Church. She was a former resident of
Dorchester, Mass., and was the last surviving member of her immediate
family.
She was predeceased by five brothers, James; Ambrose; Dan; Joseph; Alex
and Steve, four sisters, Annie; Margaret; Florence and Elizabeth.
The body will rest at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel today after 7 p.m. The
funeral mass will take place Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church
with interment St. Margaret's Cemetery, Grand Mira.

Annie Cecilia MacLELLAN - 85, Grand Mira North. Annie Cecilia MacLellan passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, following a short illness on Wednesday, December 20, 2006, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Upper Grand Mira, she was a daughter of the late Dougald and Sara Jane (Currie) MacDonald.
She was a devoted wife and mother, and a faithful member of Saint Margaret's Parish, Grand Mira, where she served on the executive of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a graduate of Saint Joseph's Convent, Mabou, and the former Normal College, and taught school for a number of years. Her interests included family genealogy, dance, and the daily completion of crossword puzzles and the cryptoquote. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Donald; daughters, Aileen (Gerard Hartigan), Miscouche, P.E.I.; and Mary, Dartmouth; sons, Philip (Nancy), Halifax, and Don (Sharon), Moncton, N.B.; grandchildren, Shannon and Sean Hartigan, Kristopher and
Nicholas MacLellan, Jaime and Joselyn MacLellan; brother, James (Florence) MacDonald, Sydney Forks; sisters, Mary Hopkins, Toronto; and Kaye (Joe Graham), Boston; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Daniel "Danny", Rev. Bernard R., and by grandson, Steven Hartigan; also by brothers, Joseph and John Joseph who died in infancy.
Visitation for Annie was held on Friday, December 22, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Donald Joseph MacLellan

Donald J. MacLellan passed away peacefully, following a short illness,
Saturday, December 23, 2006, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Grand Mira North, Donald was the son of the late Angus A. and Elizabeth (Gillis) MacLellan.
Donald was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and brother. He was a faithful, lifelong member of St. Margaret's Church, Grand Mira.
For most of his life he was a farmer and turned his hand to a variety of jobs, retiring as a school bus driver. He was a friend to people of all ages and loved storytelling, singing in church and Gaelic choirs, and prompting square sets. Donald was a rich source of information on the history and settlement of the Grand Mira area.
He is survived by daughters; Aileen (Gerard Hartigan), Miscouche, P.E.I., and Mary, Dartmouth; sons, Philip (Nancy), Halifax and Don (Sharon), Moncton, N.B., grandchildren; Shannon and Sean Hartigan, Kristopher and Nicholas MacLellan and Jaime and Joselyn MacLellan, sisters; Annie Morrison, Boston, Sr. Rita MacLellan CSM, Antigonish, Isabel (Herbie) MacGillivary, South Bar, and Sr. Josephine MacLellan CSM, Antigonish, brothers; Martin (Emily) MacLellan, Grand Mira North and Frank (Fran) MacLellan, Sydney; as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by Annie, his beloved wife of 62 years, sisters; Jeanette Gillis, Rose Burke and Margaret Gillis, brothers; Alexander, Joseph Alex, Vincent, Andrew and John, and by grandson; Steven Hartigan.
Visitation for Donald took place Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006 from 6-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral mass was

Joseph MacDonald, 97, Sydney
Joseph Angus MacDonald, 97, 12 Essex St. Sydney, died Sunday, Dec. 11, in Sydney City Hospital.
Born at French Road, he was the son of the late Donald Lauchlin and Catherine (MacDonald) MacDonald.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the Sydney Gaelic Society.
Prior to his retirement in 1961 he was employed as salesman with Eastern Bakeries Limited for more than 40 years.
He was last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his wife the former Agnes Currie; one daughter Marie (Mrs. Douglas MacDougall), Westmount; four sons Daniel, Sydney River, Currie, Sydney, Anslem, New Glasgow, and Vincent, Halifax; 22 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two daughters Catherine and Anita, brothers Lauchlin and Angus and one sister Rachael.
The body will be in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel this evening. The funeral mass will be held Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church with Rev. A. MacNeil officiating. Interment will be made in Resurrection Cemetery.

Mary Anne MacKINNON - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mary Anne MacKinnon, 86, of Sydney, formerly of Grand Mira North, on Thursday, April 19, 2007, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Grand Mira, she was the daughter of the late John Joseph and Mary Margaret Gillis (Grand Mira).
She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and a long-time member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Women's League. Mary Anne had a strong devotion to Our Lady.
She was a kind, giving and compassionate mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister and would always have a cup of tea and her great tea biscuits ready when family and friends came to visit.
She is survived by daughters, Mary (Pat) Larade, Sydney; Agnes (Paul) Grundy, Hammonds Plains; sons, Donnie (Sharon), Sydney River; Joey, Whitney Pier; Michael (Ellie), Ontario; Ambrose (Linda), Westmount; Albert (Martina), Howie Centre; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ellen "Florence" (Ivan) Bates, Josie Peters, and daughter-in-law, Lorna MacKinnon, Ontario.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Alex "Bonnach" MacKinnon; sons, Rannie, John, Raymond; sisters, Isobel, Annie Lucy, and brother, Johnnie.

The death occurred Thursday, January 18, 2007, in St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish, of Rev. Robert
Neville, a priest of the Diocese of Antigonish.
Father Neville was born
in Sydney, a son of the late Joseph and Josephine (MacDonald) Neville.
Father Neville received his early education in Sydney. He attended Xavier
Junior College in Sydney and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University
in Antigonish. He completed his theological studies at Holy Heart
Seminary in Halifax. Father Neville was ordained to the priesthood on May
19, 1968, at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, by Bishop William E.
Power.
Father Neville was initially assigned to St. Theresa's Parish,
Sydney, for the summer months and then to Mount Carmel Parish, New
Waterford.
He also studied at Boston University and at the University of
British Columbia. He served on the faculty of St. Francis Xavier
University.
Other assignments included St. Ninian's, Antigonish; Stella
Maris, Inverness; St. Joseph's, Port Hawkesbury; St. John the Baptist,
Brook Village; St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, Grand Mira; St. Agnes,
New Waterford, and most recently parish priest of St. Andrew's Parish,
St. Andrew's.
Father Neville is survived by brothers, Orville (Beverly),
Newfoundland, and Paul, Sydney; sisters, Janice (Perry) Peddle,
Centreville, and Patricia (Darryl) Crossman, Kentville. He was
predeceased by his brother, Allan.
Visitation will take place in St.
Andrew's Parish Church, St. Andrew's, Antigonish Co., on Sunday 2-6 p.m.
with a vigil prayer service at 4:30 p.m. The body will be transferred to
Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sydney, for visitation on Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

He retired from Canada Post in 1980 having worked as a courier on the Sydney East Bay route. He was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Army, serving from 1942-1946. MacKINNON, John Martin - 63, 43 Jefferson Lane, Sydney, formerly of Grimsby, Ont., died June 9, 1993, at home. Born in Grand Mira, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary Lucy (Gillis) MacKinnon. He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney; 4th degree member of Knights of Columbus and belonged to lodges in both Grimsby, Ont., and Sydney River. He was involved in the Cape Breton Gaelic Society and retired in 1992 after being employed in Hamilton, Ont., with Stelco Steel for 25 years, prior to which he had been employed with Sydney Steel Corp. He is survived by his wife, the former Theresa Lynch; two daughters, Nancy, Andrea, both of Grimsby; two sons, Michael, David, both of Grimsby; four sisters, Kay Hiltz, Jean Fitzpatrick, Theresa MacNeil, all of Sydney; Jessie Wright, Marion Bridge; three brothers, Bernard, Allie, Joseph, all of Sydney; two grandchildren. MacDONALD, Rev. Bernard Roderick - 69, R.K. MacDonald Guest House, Antigonish, died August 1, 1993, in the guest house. Born in Upper Grand Mira, Cape Breton County, he was a son of the late Dougald and Sarah Jane (Currie) MacDonald. He received his early education in Sydney and graduated from Saint Francis Xavier University with a bachelor of arts degree. He received his theological education at Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax and was ordained to the priesthood at Saint Ninian's Cathedral, Antigonish, on June 3, 1950. After his first appointment as assistant at Paroisse Saint Pierre in Cheticamp, he took ill. Following extensive brain surgery at the Montreal Neurological Institute, he recuperated at Saint Martha's Hospital in Antigonish. After this time, he served as assistant in a wide variety of parishes in the Diocese of Antigonish; Sacred Heart in Sydney; St. Patrick's in Lochaber; St. Lawrence's in Mulgrave; St. Mary's in Mabou; St. Eugene's in Dominion and especially at St. Ninian's Cathedral in Antigonish. He served as assistant and in residence at the cathedral for over 20 years. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hopkins, Toronto; Mrs. Kaye MacLellan, Boston, Mass.; Mrs. Annie MacLellan, Grand Mira; brother, James, Sydney Forks. Visitation will be this afternoon in MacIsaac's Funeral Home, Antigonish. GALLANT, Jason Wilfred Henry - 23, Framboise, Richmond County, formerly of Toronto, died August 9, 1993, in Framboise. Born in Victoria, B.C., he was a son of Julia Gallant, Framboise, and Lawrence O'Donnell, Medicine Hat, Alta. He was a member of St. Margaret's Parish, Grand Mira and attended service at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Framboise. He recently acquired his grade 12 equivalency diploma in Sydney. He had been employed in the family run canteen business in Framboise. He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Kathleen Gallant, Framboise; paternal grandfather, John O'Donnell, Toronto; stepsister, Kelly O'Donnell, Medicine Hat; half-brother, Morgan O'Donnell, Medicine Hat. He was one of the driving forces of a group under the direction of Rev. E.J. Nash which was instrumental in the realization of St. Anne's Summer Camp at Long Island, Cape Breton. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Mary, resided in Grand Mira for the past 23 years, where he was a member of St. Margaret's Church. While living in Glace Bay, he was a member of St. Anne's Church and later Holy Cross Church. He was a very active member of the Mira and District Adult Recreation Centre. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War. MacEACHERN, Joseph Edward - 73, Jagers Cove, Grand Mira North, formerly of Park Street, Sydney, died July 6, 1996. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late John and Margaret (Campbell) MacEachern. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, whom he represented in Holland at the 50th anniversary of D-Day celebrations. After completing his war service, he attended the veteran's upgrading program in Pictou where he earned his high school diploma. He attended Queen's University and St. Francis Xavier University. In 1951, he graduated with his bachelor of commerce degree. He taught accounting part-time at St. Francis Xavier Junior College, Sydney, for several years while a member of the public accounting firm of Hunt & Roach. In 1971, he was appointed clerktreasurer of the municipality of Cape Breton County, a position he held until he retired in 1988. An avid sportsman, he was a member of the 1951 St. Francis Xavier Varsity Hockey Team which was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. He was a former member of Lingan Golf and Country Club, Sydney Curling Club and Sydney Dart League. In 1994, he was inducted into the Royal Canadian Legion Curling Hall of Fame. He served three terms as president of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney and was bestowed the Meritorious Service Award and the Palm Leaf. A strong supporter of the community, in 1964 he served as chair of the United Appeal campaign. He twice offered for federal election as a liberal candidate in Cape Breton, the Sydneys and he served on the Residential Tenancies Board. Until recently, he served as president of the parish council of St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Grand Mira. Born in Grand Mira South, he was a son of the late Neil H. and Marion (Lahey) MacKinnon. He was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, class of 1957. He was a teacher by profession for 30 years. He was an elected representative of District 13 School Board and at the time of his death served as chairman of the Cape Breton/Victoria Regional School Board. He served as vice-principal and later principal of Malcolm Munroe Memorial Junior High School. He was a councillor for Cape Breton County for 30 years; deputy warden for 15 years and warden for 3 years. He was vice-chairman of the 1987 Jeux-Canada Games. He was instrumental in establishly french immersion in schools; instrumental in establishing the New Dawn Guest Home at the radar base; instrumental in opening and operating a school cafeteria at Malcolm Munroe. Under his direction, as warden, the incinerator was put into operation at Grand Lake Road as well as many new Municipal services for residents of Cape Breton County. MacINTYRE, Donald A. (Danny) - 67, 19 Rosewood Dr., Sydney, died May 31, 1997, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in French Road, he was a son of the late Joseph Hugh and Margaret (MacKinnon) MacIntyre (Grand Mira). He was employed at Devco for 40 years, retiring from the purchasing department as projects manager in 1987 due to illness. He was a life member of the Gaelic Society; member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12; 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus and member of St. Theresa's Parish. He had a lifelong love of piping. He was best known for his skill and dedication as a teacher of piping. He instructed the Gaelic College Pipe Band for more than 16 years. He also instructed the MacDougall Girls Pipe Band, Iona Highland Village Pipe Band, Sydney Academy Air Cadets 29 Squadron and numerous individual students. He was always willing to give his time playing for charities and numerous social events. He was a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders, later known as the 2nd Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders, for 40 years, achieving the rank of pipe major and chief warrant officer. His bands performed at such places as the White House, the openings of the Canso Causeway and Seal Island Bridge, Expo '67 and the first Nova Scotia Tattoo. His individual accomplishments included judging at the Antigonish Highland Games, organizing the Sydney Highland Games in the late 1970s, playing in the Rose Bowl Parade and at the International Gathering of the Clans in Scotland, as well as playing at the opening of several facilities such as the Alexander Graham Bell Museum and the Department of Veteran Affairs building on Prince Edward Island. His piping compositions can be found in many local music publications. GILLIS, John Alexander - 86, passed away peacefully at Carefield Manor on November 20, 1998. He was a resident of Carefield Manor for the past four years. Previous to this, he lived at 115 Cabot St. Born in Grand Mira, he was the son of the late Angus and Mary Gillis. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a past employee of the Sydney Steel Corporation. He is survived by his wife, the former Florence MacPherson; daughters, Sandra (Mrs. Yvon Lambert), Montreal; Valerie (Mrs. Rod MacDonald), Lower Sackville; Nancy (Mrs. Cameron McKinnon), Truro; son, Blaine (Janette MacPherson), Sydney; 11 grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was well-known and much loved for his warm smile and wonderful sense of humour. His special gift of making people laugh will be greatly missed by family and friends. Don't worry Dad, we will remember your words - "Keep smiling, it makes everyone wonder what you've been up to."
